Disaster Preparedness

Emergencies can happen unexpectedly, especially in the Columbus, GA and Phenix City, AL area where severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, and power outages are common. While many families prepare emergency plans for themselves, pets are often forgotten until the last minute.

At Uptown Veterinary Clinic, we encourage pet owners to include their pets in every emergency preparedness plan. Preparing ahead of time can help keep your pet safe and reduce stress during emergencies.

Be Sure to Add

Pet Supplies in Your Emergency Kit

Keep a simple pet emergency kit in an easy-to-access location. Your kit should include:

At least three days of food and water
Medications and medical records
Leash, harness, or carrier
Food and water bowls
Waste bags or litter supplies
Comfort items like toys or blankets
Recent photos of your pet
Updated ID tags and microchip information

At Uptown Veterinary Clinic we use a phone app called Vello where you can easily access your pet’s vaccination records and some medical notes. If your pet has special medical needs, be sure to include extra supplies and instructions in your kit.

Keep Identification Updated

Pets can easily become separated from their families during emergencies. Make sure your pet has:

A collar with current contact information
A registered microchip
Recent photos saved on your phone

Microchipping greatly improves the chances of being reunited with your pet if they get lost. This a service we provide at Uptown Veterinary Clinic.

Plan for Evacuation

If you need to evacuate, take your pets with you. Before an emergency happens:

Identify pet-friendly hotels or shelters.
Practice loading your pet into a carrier or vehicle.
Keep carriers and leashes easy to access.
Know where your pet’s supplies are stored.

Never leave pets behind during severe weather or evacuations.

Severe Weather Safety Tips

During storms or tornado warnings:

Bring pets indoors immediately.
Keep them in a secure interior room away from windows.
Use a leash or carrier if your pet becomes anxious.

Keep Vaccines & Preventative Care Current

Emergencies may place pets in shelters, boarding facilities, or around unfamiliar animals. Staying current on vaccinations, flea prevention, and wellness visits helps protect your pet from illness or parasites during a possibly stressful situation.
