Heartworm Prevention

April is Heartworm Awareness Month

Heartworm disease is a serious, and potentially fatal, condition affecting pets across the United States, especially right here in the Southeast. The good news? It’s almost entirely preventable. During Heartworm Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to understand the risks and protect your pet year-round.

What Causes Heartworms

Heartworm disease is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. These worms are spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

When a mosquito carrying heartworm larvae bites your pet, those larvae enter the bloodstream and mature over several months into adult worms. These worms can grow up to a foot long and live in the heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels.

Because mosquitoes are everywhere both indoor and outdoor pets are at risk. In fact, heartworm disease has been diagnosed in all 50 states.

Heartworm Myth

Many believe indoor pets are not a susceptible to heart worms, but indoor pets are just as at-risk as outdoor pets.

Why Are Heartworms Deadly

Heartworm disease is not just a nuisance, it’s a progressive and dangerous condition. As the worms grow and multiply, they cause:

Severe lung disease
Damage to blood vessels
Heart failure
Organ damage (including liver and kidneys)
Potential sudden death

Because adult worms physically block blood flow and trigger inflammation, even a small number of worms can significantly impact your pet’s health. In advanced cases, pets may collapse or experience life-threatening complications.

Why It's Better to Prevent Than to Treat

Prevention is always safer, easier, and more affordable than treatment. Treating heartworm disease is a lengthy and sometimes risky process that can involve:

Multiple veterinary visits
Painful injections
Strict exercise restriction for months
Potential complications during treatment

Even more importantly, once heartworms reach adulthood, they are much harder and more dangerous to eliminate.

Meanwhile, prevention is simple. Heartworm preventives are highly effective when given consistently and on schedule.

That’s why veterinarians emphasize a simple message: prevention saves lives.

Protect Your Pet Year-Round

In areas like Columbus and Phenix City, where warm weather supports mosquito populations for much of the year, consistent prevention is especially important. The American Heartworm Society recommends “Think 12” which means pets should receive heartworm prevention year-round and be tested annually.

Heartworm disease is silent in its early stages, often showing no symptoms until significant damage has already occurred. Regular testing and prevention are the best ways to ensure your pet stays healthy.
